The Joint Organic Congress 2006 is held in cooperation with 17 EU-funded research projects on organic food and farming and the Danish Biennial Congress. This creates a unique opportunity for communication of research related to contemporary aspects of European organic farming. Most of this issue of DARCOFenews is devoted to an outline of this major event.

Towards a sustainable Europe
Topic 1 / Within this topic, sessions on economic, social, environmental, mercantile, and political aspects of organic food and farming will be conducted. Furthermore, sessions will discuss if and how organic food and farming systems can enhance a sustainable development in rural areas.

Improving quality of crops, soil and environment

Topic 2 / The topic will include sessions on improvements of organic plant production, and how this production affects soil quality and the environment. Furthermore, the connection between organic production methods and nutritional content of plant products will be examined.

Animal husbandry - health, welfare and food quality
Topic 3 / The topic will consist of sessions on organic livestock farming, including animal health and welfare. Furthermore, there will be sessions on food quality and food safety together with socio-economic aspects of organic animal production.

Consuming organics
|

Topic 4 / The topic will include sessions on consumer relations together with sessions on general nutritional and health aspects of organic food. The topic discusses for example the general claim that organic food is healthier than conventional food. Also focus is on the 'occasional organic buyer'.

Founding of a European Consortium for Organic Animal Breeding (Eco-AB)
A new European association will be set up on the development of organic animal breeding. The name will be: 'European Consortium for Organic Animal Breeding' (Eco-AB)' as a parallel to the existing 'European Consortium for Organic Plant Breeding' (Eco-PB). The goal of Eco-AB is to stimulate organic agriculture through animal breeding directed at the needs of organic farming systems. Read the article

Globalisation as a challenge or opportunity for organic farming
