Proposal for new Council regulation on organic production
In December 2005 the EU Commission adopted a proposal for a new Council regulation on organic production. The aim of the new regulation is to improve clarity for both consumers and farmers. However, stakeholders have raised questions and expressed various concerns in regards to the proposed regulation.
In order to address these issues the project Organic Revision, coordinated by DARCOF, has identified three contested areas that need to be further analysed. These areas are related to:
- How local is local the issue of distant trade
- Organic (in)dependency inputs and integrity of OA
- Intensification of organic food and farming animal health & welfare, product quality
These and further issues will be thoroughly examined and discussed on May 30 31 at the Joint Organic Congress in Odense, Denmark. For a full account of the work in Organic Revision, please visit the project homepage: www.organic-revision.org.
Overview of EU-research with DARCOF participation
Within the last years the European Union has financed a growing number of research projects in organic farming. We have worked out a summary of research with DARCOF participation and a survey of sites giving an overview of research within this area.
