EcoWiki - a free website for exchange of information on organic farming

The EcoWiki website offers a platform for development of ideas and projects in organic farming. For example, the system can be used as a cheap and rapid way to establish a homepage for a new project. And furthermore, as pages can be edited and amended, the system acts as a combination between e-mails and traditional homepages - allowing participants to work on joint documents and to see the result as Internet pages.

The EcoWiki website was established in February 2004 by Hugo Fjelsted Alrøe (DARCOF) and is currently expanding. Two recent projects that use the EcoWiki platform are the IFOAM Task Force on rewriting the principles of organic agriculture and the knowledge synthesis on organic agriculture in a global perspective, initiated by DARCOF.

Part of the WikiWikiWeb

The EcoWiki site is targeted towards organic agriculture and food systems, but the WikiWikiWeb (or just Wiki) is, in fact, a system in worldwide use. WikiWikiWeb is an "open-editing" system, where the emphasis is on the authoring and collaboration of documents rather than the simple browsing or viewing of them. The basic concept of a WikiWikiWeb is that (almost) anyone can edit any page. While at first this sounds like a recipe for complete anarchy, the truth is that sites using this system have developed surprisingly complex and rich communities for online collaboration and communication.

Although it is possible for someone to go and destroy everything on a page, it doesn't seem to happen often. And, many systems, including EcoWiki, have built-in mechanisms to restore content that has been defaced or destroyed.
